Baptisia x variicolor 'Twilight Prairie Blues'

[ height 32 in., flower deep violet-lemon in late spring, sun , clump former]

FALSE INDIGO Long-lived and deeply rooted perennial with flowers that resemble lupines. Once established, the plants should be left undisturbed. Serves as an excellent foliage plant alone with the additional bonus of good flowers. Leaves are gray green, smooth and cloverlike. May be trimmed after flowering to promote fresh foliage and shape. Thrives in average to infertile soils. B. ‘Twilight Prairie Blues’ – When we first started growing this Baptisia I couldn’t help thinking not another fancy hybrid to nurse.  Plant vigor has proved to be as good as B. australis if not better.  The flower speaks for itself, upon opening it is a muted purplish blue with a lemon yellow keel.  As the flower ages, the purplish blue fades to a truer blue claiming its namesake.  Another great Baptisia for the prairie or meadow planting and equally at home in the cottage garden.
