Rhexia mariana  MARYLAND MEADOW BEAUTY  Native to the east coast of North America where it prefers moist to wet conditions.  The flowers have 4 petals, each being medium pink or white, contrasting the yellow stamens.  Plants do have a spreading habit and might not be suited to a tailored border but would be quite at home in a native or informal planting.  Rhexia mariana is considered endangered in many states.

Rhamnus frangula 'Fine Line' BUCKTHORN A narrow columnar growth habit combined with fern-like foliage creates a wonderful vertical movement within the border.  R. ‘Fine Line’ is a shrub that combines well with perennials in the garden because it needs only a small footprint and doesn’t crowd out neighboring plants.  Flowers are insignificant and berries are formed only rarely and have shown to be sterile.

Rodgersia RODGER'S FLOWER Grow best in rich permanently moist soils in partial shade. The large leaves can scorch if the plant is allowed to dry out. Flowers are borne on large stems similar to Astilbe. Will spread to form a nice clump where happy. A handsome plant especially when naturalized by a stream or pond.

Rosa ‘Knock Out’ This low maintenance rose has cherry-red, lightly fragrant flowers and continuous bloom from June into November. Excellent disease resistance, compact habit and self cleaning blooms add to the appeal. Rosa ‘Blushing Knockout’ A sport of Rosa ‘Knockout’ discovered at Yoder. Soft pink blooms continuous, mildly fragrant and self-cleaning. Looked great in our nursery pots in October 2005. Rosa ‘The Fairy’ Arching mound of glossy foliage with masses of small double soft pink blooms in large clusters that fade to white. Flowers from June into November. Good disease resistance.

Rubus pentalobus 'Emerald Carpet' (R. calycinoides) ORNAMENTAL RASPBERRY an excellent vigorous ground cover with small dark green leaves that turn a vivid red in the fall. Inconspicuous white flowers appear in late spring followed by reddish orange fruits. Adaptable to most well drained soils.

Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldstrum' BROWN EYED SUSAN Prefers moist soil but tolerates any moderately fertile soil that is neither too wet nor too dry. A vigorous colonizer for larger areas, or a somewhat confined border position. Leaves are green and coarsely hairy, on erect branching stems which produce a long succession of flowers.

Ruella humilis  WILD PETUNIA  This native wild Petunia is hardy to zone 5 and offers gardeners soft lavender flowers in the classic Petunia form.  Ruella does reseed a bit, not invasively though, and so are perfect for more of a natural garden were they can find their own niches and ideal growing conditions.

Ruschia pulvinaris UPRIGHT ICE PLANT  These plants must have xeric, dry rock garden type conditions in order to survive, our wet winters especially.  A unique overall form, the plants are very compact upright clumps, with blue green succulent foliage.  Pink ice plant type flowers cover the plants in spring.

Ruta graveolens 'Blue Beauty'  RUE  A sub-shrub, meaning it forms a woody base, R. graveolens has blue-green foliage and yellow flowers.  The Ruta’s have a well-documented history.  They were once used in Christianity as a symbol of repentance, and it is said that the symbol of the club on playing cards was modeled after a Rue leaf.  They need full sun in drier soils.
